Tutorial #2 - Creating a new emote

This tutorial demonstrates how to add a new emote to an emote file.

1. Opening the file
Click on "File" in EmotePad's main menu to display the File menu. Click on the " Open" option from the menu.

The default location for the "emote_user.dat" file is "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger". Browse to that location by first selecting "Local Disk (C:)" from the "Look in:" drop down list. Then double-click the folder named "Program Files", next double-click the folder named "Yahoo!", and finally double-click the folder named "Messenger".

Select the file named "emote_user.dat" and click the "Open" button. Emotepad will open the file and list all of its emotes. There is only one emote in this file, and it is named "Custom". (This tutorial uses the default version of the "emote_user.dat" file.)

2. Creating a new emote
Click on the " New emote" button from the toolbar. A new, blank emote is created. The default name "New Emote" is added to the list of emotes.

With the "New Emote" selected in the emote list, click on the highlighted text. This will allow you to rename the new emote.

Type the new name for the emote. Here I have changed the name to "PULL_FINGER".

Move the cursor to the Room emote (top) box, and type the text "pull my finger" for the Room emote.

Select all the new text by clicking on the " Select All" button from the toolbar. EmotePad's "Status Bar" (very bottom of window) shows that the last font selected was "Arial - 12 - Bold". This means we can click the " Last Font" button on the toolbar to quickly change the highlighted text to Arial - 12 - Bold.

Change the color of the text to black. With the text highlighted, select the color "Black" from the "Color" menu.

Move the edit cursor to the end of the Room emote. Insert a "Special" character by clicking on the " Special" button from the toolbar. The character I want is in the Wingdings font. I select the character, then double-click it to add it to the "Copy" box. Then click the "Copy" button.

The "Special" character is a little too small. Highlight the "Special" character, and click the " Font" button from the toolbar. Select "Wingdings" from the font list. Select "Bold" from the font style. Select "20" for the size. Click the "OK" button.

While the "Special" character is highlighted, change its color to orange. (Notice the "Status Bar" now shows "Wingdings - 20 - Bold" as the last font.)

Click on the " Select All" button from the toolbar. Then click the " Copy" button from the toolbar.

Move the edit cursor to the User emote (bottom) box. Click on the " Paste" button from the toolbar.

Move the edit cursor to the beginning of the User emote (bottom). Place it before the first word "pull", and type "Hey %s,". When you use this emote in a chat room, the "%s" will be replaced by the user's name you select in the chat room.

3. Saving the file

Save the file by clicking on the " Save File" button from the toolbar. The next time you open a chat room window, your new "PULL_FINGER" emote will be available.
